WELCOME GUEST:SUMATRA PERMATA GAYO

This month's Welcome Guest coffee is a rich, fruity coffee from the Bener Meriah Province, producing flavour notes of dried fig, grapefruit, and walnuts ☕.

OUR ETHICALLY GROWN COFFEE

Deep in the Gayo Highlands of Central Aceh, northern Sumatra, lies one of Indonesia’s most rural coffee-growing regions. This high plateau is home to Bener Meriah Regency, once part of Central Aceh until 2003.

Permata Gayo Cooperative was founded in 2006, following the devastating Aceh conflict that ended in 2004. Despite the challenges, farmers rebuilt their coffee farms, growing from 468 members in 2007 to over 2,125 today. Their dedication has earned them Rainforest Alliance, Organic, and Fairtrade certifications.

Thanks to the Fairtrade premium, the cooperative has funded 24 impactful projects, including:
✅ Establishing a coffee nursery
✅ Building a cupping lab and employing two Q Graders
✅ Training farmers in sustainable composting
✅ Investing in grass cutters to reduce herbicide use
✅ Providing food support during low seasons

MORE ABOUT PERMATA GAYO..

Beyond coffee, Permata Gayo takes pride in its cultural heritage, particularly the traditional

Saman dance of the Aceh province. With community support, they were able to purchase costumes—previously rented at $200 per day—helping preserve this tradition for future generations.
